The Boston Red Sox (78-84) finished last in the American League AL East division after a disappointing season from the plate and the mound. In Boston’s final game of the season, the Red Sox grabbed a win beating the first place Baltimore Orioles 6-1. Pitcher Tanner Houck pitched a total of six innings while only allowing two hits all night and striking out six batters. The Red Sox ended on a somewhat positive note tying the Orioles in their final four-game series of the season. The Red Sox had an average game from behind the plate, but the Orioles had three errors in the diamond. In the end, Boston’s five hits was enough to give them a win in the last regular-season game of 2023. From a hitting perspective, the Red Sox lineup finished with only one batter recording an average above 300. The production from behind the plate wasn’t what it needed to be for the Red Sox in 2023 with the four other AL East teams having very deep and successful lineups this season. The Red Sox have young talent, specifically in the outfield, but Boston may need to make some changes in some areas when next season rolls around. This is the second year the Red Sox have missed the postseason after losing to the Houston Astros in the American League Championship Series two games to four games in 2021. If the Red Sox want to find any success next season in 2024, this franchise must seek several improvements on both the field and from the plate. Overall, the 2023 season just doesn’t live up to the standard of this team.
