The Florida Gators got over a big hump last Saturday after they took down the Gamecocks in Columbia. After failing many times to storm back and win games after being down by multiple scores, the Gators won in epic fashion after a game-winning touchdown drive was led by Graham Mertz and Ricky Pearsall.
Defensively, the struggles for the Gators continued and held this team back through four quarters. Shemar James once again led this team in tackles with eight total. However, many tackles were missed all throughout the defense and multiple defensive backs were beat deep. On special teams, Trey Smack had one of his best performances as a Gator nailing 4 of 5 field goals including a long 54-yard field goal.
The Gators arguably played their best game offensively, with Graham Mertz having a career performance completing 30 of 48 passes for 423 yards and three touchdowns. Early in the fourth quarter the Gators were down ten points and needed what seemed to be a miracle.
This Florida offense was forced to convert on fourth and long on the last two drives of the game which later led two six points on both drives.
On the final drive of the game, freshman wide receiver Tre Wilson kept the drive going after catching a tipped pass from veteran receiver Ricky Pearsall. Later that drive, Graham Mertz threw the game winning touchdown pass to Ricky Pearsall to beat the Gamecocks 41-39. This team still has a long ways to go in terms of playing complete football on both sides, but the improvement is there
